Getting from Siena to San Gimignano

Getting from Siena to San Gimignano

You can reach San Gimignano from Siena by bus, or by train to Poggibonsi followed by a bus.

Autolinee Toscane operates line 130, which serves Siena, Poggibonsi and San Gimignano. Visitor information also describes regular bus connections from Siena, Florence and Poggibonsi. If you prefer the train for part of the journey, take it to Poggibonsi/San Gimignano station and continue by bus to town.

Check the service details before setting out so you can plan your return as well as your arrival. The route between Siena railway station and the hotel area can help with the first leg of your trip. For a day spent in the city instead, plan a walkable route around Siena.

A walk through the historic centre

A walk through the historic centre

San Gimignano’s historic centre is the setting for its civic museums and historic buildings.

Keep your visit flexible: the Town Hall, Picture Gallery and Torre Grossa form one museum complex at Piazza Duomo, 2, while other civic collections are spread among sites in town. You can make the central complex your starting point, then decide how much time to give the other museums and the town’s lanes.

The civic museums also include the Church of San Lorenzo in Ponte and the Santa Chiara Museum Complex. Santa Chiara brings together archaeological and Via Francigena museums, the Herbarium of Santa Fina, and the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art. If you want to see more than the central complex, allow time to visit these additional collections too.

Towers, civic sights and viewpoints

The Town Hall, Picture Gallery and Torre Grossa bring together major civic and artistic sights at Piazza Duomo.

The complex includes the Palazzo Comunale and Torre Grossa, and forms a central part of the town’s historical and artistic itinerary. The Palazzo Comunale was built in 1288. Its location makes the complex a practical anchor for a visit focused on San Gimignano’s civic heritage.

The combined ticket for all San Gimignano Civic Museums costs €10 at full price and €8 at the reduced price, and is valid for three consecutive days. That gives you flexibility to spread the museum visits across more than one day if your plans allow.

The civic museums’ stated hours follow a seasonal pattern: 10:00–19:30 from 1 April through 31 October, with last admission at 19:00; 11:00–17:30 from 1 November through 31 March, with last admission at 17:00. A separate holiday schedule runs 10:30–18:30 from 26 December through 6 January, with last admission at 18:00. The museums are closed on 25 December.

Return-trip and local transport planning

Return-trip and local transport planning

Plan your return around the bus or train connection you choose for the outward journey.

If you’re travelling by bus, line 130 connects San Gimignano with Poggibonsi and Siena. If you arrived by train, remember that the return trip also involves a bus between town and Poggibonsi/San Gimignano station. Leave time to get back to your stop or station before your planned departure.

If you’re driving, the municipality locates visitor car parks north and south of town. P1 Giubileo has 305 spaces, including five reserved for disabled users.

Its tariff from 08:00 to 20:00 is €2 for the first hour or fraction, €2 for the second hour or fraction, and €1.50 for each following hour. The maximum is €7 for the first 24 consecutive hours, €6 for the second consecutive day, and €5 per day from the third day onward.

For a shorter museum visit, Torre e Casa Campatelli is in the town centre, 200 metres from Porta San Giovanni, and a visit takes 45 minutes. For current bus, parking, ticket and opening details, check the official San Gimignano municipal site and Autolinee Toscane before you go.
