Montalcino is a practical day trip from Siena, roughly a 55-minute drive from Domus Il Palio. You can travel by car or take Autolinee Toscane line 114, then spend time in the historic centre and visit the town’s fortress.

  • Bus: line 114 connects Siena and Montalcino via Buonconvento and Torrenieri, without a transfer.
  • Historic-centre stop: Piazza del Popolo, home to the late-13th-century Palazzo dei Priori.

If you’re planning more time in the city, a walkable Siena itinerary can help you make the most of another day.

You can reach Montalcino from Siena by car or on a direct bus route.

Driving gives you control over your departure and return, while line 114 is a public-transport option that connects the two towns via Buonconvento and Torrenieri. The route does not require a transfer. In Siena, the line serves Siena Ferrovia, Siena Autostazione and Siena-Via Tozzi, among other stops. Montalcino’s historic centre

Montalcino’s historic centre

Piazza del Popolo is a useful point of focus in Montalcino’s historic centre.

The square is home to Palazzo dei Priori, which dates from the late 13th century. From here, you can make the historic centre part of a compact visit before heading to the fortress.

The square and palazzo are central sights, so allow your schedule to be guided by the time you want to spend there and at the fortress rather than assuming a fixed walking itinerary.

Montalcino’s fortress combines medieval construction with a key role in the Republic of Siena’s final resistance to the Medici.

The people of Siena began building the fortress in 1361, partly reusing the town’s existing 13th-century walls. Its pentagonal plan incorporates older structures, including the tower of San Giovanni and the keep of San Martino.

In the mid-16th century, it became the last bastion of the Republic of Siena’s resistance to the Medici conquest. The outer rampart on the south side dates from the period after Montalcino surrendered in 1559.

You can go from the courtyard to the stands and towers. The walls, towers and external patrol walkway are described as accessible to visitors, offering several ways to take in the fortress and its outlook over the town. Opening patterns can vary, so verify the current arrangements before you plan your visit.

Plan transport and return timing
