Walk the walled village

Monteriggioni’s main sights are its wall walkways and the “Monteriggioni in Arme” educational route.

The Sienese constructed the fortress at the start of the 13th century. Walking through the village gives you a close look at its walled layout, while the route “Monteriggioni in Arme” adds context about the fortress’s past.

It has four rooms, each focused on a moment in the fortress’s history, with reproductions of weapons and armour and models of siege engines and techniques.

A combined ticket covers the wall walkways, “Monteriggioni in Arme,” and the M.A.M. Archaeological Museum in Abbadia Isola. The full price is €5 and the reduced price is €3.50.

Admission is free for children under 8 accompanied by an adult, excluding school groups; it is also free for residents of the Municipality of Monteriggioni, guides and teachers accompanying organised groups, and people with disabilities.

The wall walk offers views of the Chianti hills to the south and the Elsa Valley to the north.

On a clear day, you may also see San Gimignano and its towers from the north side. The changing outlooks make the wall walk a useful way to take in the landscape as well as the village’s fortifications.

If you’re choosing what to see first, start with the walls, then spend time on the educational route to learn about the fortress’s history.
